Chapter 23
LYRA
We walked in silence across the main square and down some side streets to an address that XT5 knew, but we had never been to. Apparently, there were restaurants in Oamaru, and they served fine cuisine.
I wanted so bad to ask him why he stopped kissing me, but if it was because I didnât kiss wellâ¦did I really want to know that? What if it was because he wasnât attracted to me? What if it was because he didnât like me? I had never considered that circumstance with any of my guys; I assumed they wanted me as much as I wanted each one of them. I never thought it could be possible that maybe they werenât as interested and they were only allowing me to make them my mates to save their lives.
The thought twisted my stomach into a knot as we walked toward Lord Verne, but the reality was I had saved their lives. I would do it again. It only hurt my feelings we were mates, and he was not attracted to me.
We walked along a row of low brick buildings until we came to the front entrance of Chez Jules. It had a nondescript facade with black windows and a glass door that also was blacked out. It looked a little run down as if this place had been a restaurant for a hundred years.
âAre you sure this is the right place?â Maxwell asked XT5.
âYes, of course Iâm sure,â XT5 responded.
Reaching out an appendage, she grasped the door handle and pulled it open, stepping back so we could walk in first. Maxwell stepped in front of me, barring my way.
âLet me go in first,â he said. âIn case thereâs anything wrong.â
I rolled my eyes at him. âSince when do you start acting like Lex? What would Lord Verne be doing? Laying in wait?â I couldnât stop the chuckle that rose in me.
âIâm just doing my job,â Maxwell said gruffly.
I sighed. Clearly, that was the truth; thatâs all he was doing was his job. He wasnât taking care of me because he wanted to, he was taking care of me because he was bound to do it. He was bound by our relationship, and he was bound by his agreement with Lex to take care of me.
âOkay, you can come in.â He waved me inside the restaurant.
The interior was subdued and dark. There were candles lit on each table and low light sconces on the wall emitting just enough gas lamp light to make sure you could see what was near you. XT5 rolled over to a woman who was standing by a pedestal at the front of the restaurant. She was dressed to the nines in a long, purple, Victorian dress with blonde long hair falling around her shoulders; it was like a wave of curtains.
âI have Lyra,â XT5 said. âAnd I will be outside. Are you good here?â
âYes, I will be just fine.â I looked at the blonde lady.
âMy name is Melissa, and I will be your server,â she said in a bright cheery voice that matched her smile.
